Sealing – isolation of the tooth surface

Sealing is a simple and painless dental procedure that prevents cavities. The procedure consists in isolating the dental surface from the environment of the oral cavity. In this sense, the very deep grooves on the occlusal surface of the molars and premolars are covered, grooves in which food debris is retained that cannot be removed by simple brushing.

The sealings have an average duration of 2-3, up to 5 years, but periodic consultations with the dentist are necessary, so that he can check the integrity of the sealant. Once the sealant is gone, the tooth becomes vulnerable again.

The alternative to fluoridation is dental sealing, another method of prophylaxis in the treatment of dental caries, which, however, works in a different way. Sealing creates a barrier between the tooth and the factors that cause cavities, while fluoridation increases the tooth's resistance to these factors.

Junior&Family Dental Clinics dentists recommend sealing as a procedure:

  • 6 months after the eruption of the tooth, for teeth with reliefs or deep grooves;
  • for the protection of milk teeth with a very high risk of caries;
  • both for temporary teeth and for the eruption of permanent teeth, starting from the age of 5 - 7 years, up to 11 - 14 years;

Sealing is not recommended for adults who may find it difficult to get used to the sensation of changing their bite.

The alternative to sealing is dental fluoridation, another method of prophylaxis in the treatment of dental caries, which, however, works in a different way. Sealing creates a barrier between the tooth and the factors that cause cavities, while fluoridation increases the tooth's resistance to these factors.
